7 Mistakes to Avoid in Your Loc Journey: Tips for Black Women to Keep Locs Thriving

Hey, sis! If you’re on a loc journey like me, you know it’s a beautiful way to embrace your afro-textured hair. But let’s be real—growing and maintaining healthy locs isn’t always easy. I’ve been rocking my locs for seven years, and I’ve made some oopsies along the way that taught me what not to do. Today, I’m sharing the 7 biggest mistakes to avoid so your locs can stay strong, shiny, and growing long. This post is written just for you Black women who want to love your natural hair, in a friendly vibe that’s easy to read (think 6th-grade level). Plus, I’m inviting you to join the Rooterica Circle membership for more loc-loving tips, meditations, and guides.

I’m sharing a few of my favorite products below (some links are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you decide to try them — at no extra cost to you). Thank you for supporting Rooterica and this community of self-care and growth!

Mistake 1: Overwashing Your LocsI used to think washing my locs every other day would keep them clean, but girl, that was drying them out! Overwashing strips your hair’s natural oils, making locs brittle. Stick to washing every 1–2 weeks with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo like Design Essentials Oat Protein & Henna Deep Cleansing Shampoo. It cleans without zapping moisture.Fix it: Wash weekly or biweekly, and always follow with a conditioner to keep your locs soft.Mistake 2: Skipping MoistureEarly on, I thought locs didn’t need much hydration. Big mistake! Dry locs break and won’t grow long. I learned to use the LOC method (Liquid, Oil, Cream) with products like Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner and Goddess Strength 7 Oil Blend. Moisturizing keeps your locs strong and shiny.Fix it: Spritz with a leave-in, seal with oil, and add a cream daily or a few times a week.

Mistake 3: Retwisting Too OftenI used to retwist every two weeks, thinking it’d keep my locs neat. But twisting too often stressed my roots and caused thinning. Now, I retwist every 6–8 weeks with Taliah Waajid Tight Hold for Natural Hair or Lion Locs Vegan Retwist Gel. It saves my hair and still looks fresh.Fix it: Retwist every 4–8 weeks, depending on your hair, to avoid breakage.Mistake 4: Ignoring Your ScalpYour scalp is the root (pun intended!) of healthy locs. I once skipped scalp care, and it got itchy and flaky. Massaging in a lightweight oil, like Carol’s Daughter Goddess Strength, a few times a week keeps my scalp happy and promotes growth. A healthy scalp means stronger locs!Fix it: Oil your scalp regularly and use a clarifying shampoo to prevent buildup.Mistake 5: Avoiding TrimsI’ll admit it—I dodged trims for years because I didn’t want to lose length. But by year three, my ends were frayed and weak. Getting a small trim (about an inch) made my locs look fuller and helped them grow healthier. Don’t be scared to snip those split ends!Fix it: Trim every 1–2 years if your ends look thin or damaged. It’s worth it.Mistake 6: Using Heavy ProductsIn my early loc days, I piled on thick gels and butters, thinking more was better. Nope! Heavy products caused buildup, making my locs dull and hard to clean. Switching to lightweight options like Creme of Nature Argan Oil Strength & Shine Leave-In Conditioner kept my locs clean and bouncy.Fix it: Choose light, natural products that won’t clog your locs.Mistake 7: Neglecting Your BodyI learned the hard way that hair health starts inside. When I was stressed and not eating well, my locs grew slower and looked blah. Drinking water, eating fruits and veggies, and doing small self-care things (like my Rooterica Routine. Check that post!) made a huge difference. Healthy body, healthy locs!Fix it: Stay hydrated, eat balanced meals, and try stress-relievers like journaling or meditation. Why Avoiding These Mistakes MattersDodging these mistakes helped my locs go from short and struggling to long, thick, and healthy over seven years. It’s all about caring for your afro-textured hair with love and patience. By keeping your routine simple, moisturizing well, and treating your scalp right, your locs will thrive.
